UB-3787 to UB-3794

Three quality control samples of known-age wood (UB-3773 to UB-3775) were counted immediately before the first set of Stonehenge samples (UB-3787 to UB-3794). These produced results as follows;

UB-3773 1262±20BP (760-780 AD)

The results produced for calibration are 1247±16 BP (Pearson et al1986) and 1255±9BP (Stuiver and Pearson 1986).

UB-3774 1205±20BP (780-800 AD)

The results produced for calibration are 1240±16BP (Pearson et al1986) and 1209±10BP (Stuiver and Pearson 1986)

UB-3775 1224±20BP (800-820 AD)

The results produced for calibration are 1224±16BP (Pearson et al 1986) and 1201±13BP (Stuiver and Pearson1986).

The wood used for these samples was taken from the exact tree used in the 1986 calibration (ie Brabstown Q3691, see McCormac et al 1994).

UB-3820 to UB-3824

Three quality control samples of known-age wood (UB-3801 to UB-3803) were counted immediately along with the second set of Stonehenge samples (UB-3820 to UB-3824). The three results are as follows;

UB-3801 1709±17BP (380-400 AD)

The results on material of this age produced for calibration are 1681±17BP (Pearson et al 1986) and 1671±11BP (Stuiver and Pearson 1986)

UB-3802 1475±16BP (620-640 AD)

The results on material of this age produced for calibration are 1402±18BP (Pearson et al 1986) and 1433±12BP (Stuiver and Pearson 1986)

UB-3803 1594±17BP (480--500 AD)

The results on material of this age produced for calibration are 1588±17BP (Pearson et al 1986) and 1565±13BP (Stuiver and Pearson 1986)

While the samples measured as quality controls are of the same dendrochronological dates as those measured by Gordon Pearson for the 1986 calibration data, the source of the wood is not identical. UB-3801 and UB-3802 are from trees that grew in Co Cork and Co Wexford respectively, whereas the 1986 equivalents came from the opposite end of Ireland in Co Antrim. The material for UB-3803 came from Co Antrim as did its 1986 equivalent, although they were not from the same tree.

This sample was processed in January 1991 at the time when the samples from the IAEA international intercomparison (Rozanski et al 1992) were being measured at the Scottish Universities Research and Reactor Centre. The relevant results are:

C2 (Travertine) 41.22+/-22 pMC

The IAEA consensus value was 41.14pMC.

C4 (Kauri wood) 0.18+/-0.11pMC

The IAEA consensus value was 0.20-0.44pMC.

C5 (Two Creeks wood) 23.18+/-0.18pMC

The IAEA consensus value was 23.05pMC.
