All samples were measured as 14C/13C ratios relative to the NIST oxalic acid II standard (Stuiver 1983) in an accelerator mass spectrometer (AMS) system fitted with a carbon dioxide gas ion-source (Bronk and Hedges 1987; 1989; 1990; Hedges et al 1992). For a full discussion of operational details see Hedges et al (1989; 1992). Uncertainties estimate the total error in the system including the sample chemistry. This includes the statistical precision from the number of 14C nuclei detected, the reproducibility of the mass-spectrometric measurements between different targets, and the uncertainty in the estimate of the contamination background. For details of the background, cross-contamination, reproducibility, and accuracy, see Hedges et al (1992).
