This order is based on 18 radiocarbon determinations spread over eight events. Consequently, although the Sarsen Circle seems very likely to be the first dated event (over 95% confidence), our confidence may be misplaced since the estimate is based on a single sample which may be residual. With this in mind the relative order of some of the events appears well known whilst others are very uncertain.
If the sequence is analysed using groups of constructional elements which are believed archaeologically to belong together, then an order with a higher level of confidence and reliability can be given. This is Q and R Holes, Sarsen settings, Bluestone settings, and Y and Z Holes (over 95% confidence). Where stratigraphy is absent, none of these elements has less than three determinations.
