Results from the Y and Z Holes

UB-3822 3341+/-22BP (-22.3+/-0.2 per mil)

Sample: 3101D, context 3927, submitted by M Allen on 16 May 1994

Material: antler, Cervus elaphus (D Serjeantson)

Initial comment: antler (photo) stacked on the base of Y Hole 30.

Objective: to determine the relative date of these features compared to the other settings of phase 3, and to estimate the duration of this phase.

Calibrated date range: 1735 - 1530 cal BC (95% confidence)

UB-3823 3300+/-19BP (-22.5+/-0.2 per mil)

Sample: 3101E, context 3927, submitted by M Allen on 16 May 1994

Material: antler, Cervus elaphus (D Serjeantson)

Initial comment: stacked on the base of Y Hole 30, 32" below ground level.

Objective: to determine the relative date of these features compared to the other settings of phase 3, and to estimate the duration of this phase.

Calibrated date range: 1675 - 1520 cal BC (95% confidence)

UB-3824 3449+/-24BP (-22.6+/-0.2 per mil)

Sample: 3101F, context 3927, submitted by M Allen on 16 May 1994

Material: antler, Cervus elaphus (D Serjeantson)

Initial comment: stacked on the base of Y Hole 30.

Objective: to determine the relative date of these features compared to the other settings of phase 3, and to estimate the duration of this phase.

Calibrated date range: 1880 - 1690 cal BC (95% confidence)

Quality assurance measurements are available for these results from the Queen's University of Belfast Radiocarbon Laboratory, in addition to further details of the chemistry and measurement techniques.

Comment on series (M Allen): these antlers were stacked on the base of Y Hole 30 and so were deliberately placed as a single event. However they are statistically significantly different at more than 95% confidence (Ward and Wilson 1978). The high-precision of these results enables us to demonstrate that some of these items were collected and curated before deposition. This provides positive evidence of curation continuing at the Monument into the Bronze Age.

OxA-4836 3540+/-45BP (-21.2 per mil)

Sample: 4068B, context 3774, submitted by M Allen on 11 March 1994

Material: shed antler, Cervus elaphus (D Serjeantson)

Initial comment: from Z Hole 29, on the east side of the hole extending up the side with burr resting on the bottom (Hawley Diary 27/6/1923).

Objective: to determine the relative date of these features compared to the other settings of phase 3, and to estimate the duration of this phase.

Calibrated date range: 2030 - 1740 cal BC (95% confidence)

Quality assurance measurements are available for this result from the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit, in addition to further details of the chemistry and measurement techniques.
