4.16.2 The Wharf Cafe, Newark, Nottinghamshire

Another application for demolition concerned an eighteenth-century warehouse which had been subject to several fires and declared to be a dangerous structure by the local authority. Further investigation demonstrated that this was perhaps the earliest known purpose built, free standing, warehouse in Newark. The structure formed the gateway to an important local brewery, providing access to the Great North Road and the river Trent. The building was probably constructed in 1787, perhaps incorporating parts of an earlier structure. Despite its late date, the roof recalls medieval construction techniques. Most importantly, the building was an irreplaceable survival from a period of expansion in the town's trade and complemented other structures from this period such as the Great North Road Viaduct and John Carr's Town Hall; an argument which was taken into account in the Inspector's decision to refuse consent for demolition.
