The analysis of the extensive Iron Age and Romano-British settlement at Stanwick (excavated between 1985 and 1991) has continued, concentrating on the site stratigraphy and phasing. The phasing is structured to allow the development of the landscape and the numerous complexes of buildings within it to be investigated. The approach taken will also ensure that the rich artefactual and environmental evidence can be integrated as closely as possible into this framework. The extent of the excavations and the timescale of the activity (early Iron Age to sixth century AD) will allow some key questions about change during this period to be examined.
Work has progressed in several other areas. A specification was prepared for a new Access database to facilitate the phasing and to handle the large quantities of data which this site has generated. Development of the database is now starting. Other first-stage analysis tasks carried out include the processing of samples for macroscopic plant and invertebrate remains, and the initial stages of the analysis of the Iron Age pottery. Analysis of the Redlands Farm site by the Oxford Archaeology Unit is also underway.
