A programme of building recording was carried out, following the implementation, by Historic Properties South West, of the first phase of conservation and repair to the monument. This necessitated the erection of scaffolding over approximately half the structure. As well as informing the conservation and repair programme, this work contributes to our ongoing development of appropriate building recording methodologies.
Work was divided into three parts: an evaluation, to isolate, record, and initially phase areas of architectural significance (this involved the enhancement of the existing photogrammetric plotted elevations in order to inform and assist the contractors' work programme); selective recording of architectural, constructional, and historic features and their diagnostic characteristics; a continued watching brief during the works. Phase II of the conservation and repair programme will commence in mid-August 1997, when we will continue to add to the data collected before examining the most appropriate methodology for its dissemination.
