Excavation at Tulse Hill of a site found during evaluation has revealed an early Saxon settlement including 8 sunken-featured buildings and illustrates the extreme difficulty of predicting the location of early Saxon settlement activity, given the ephemeral nature of the structures and fragility of its pottery which gave little or no indication on the surface of its presence below ground level. The settlement at Tulse Hill was an unexpected discovery during work on a site thought to have potential for evidence of other periods. Excavation in advance of the extension to the Lyceum Theatre recorded a large, well-preserved assemblage of animal bone, which has warranted detailed analysis and has contributed to our understanding of the social and economic developments of Lundenwic.
