The CAS has undertaken an number of watching briefs within the secure area of the Dockyard. Most recently work has involved the North Office Block, which had been converted from the Old Smithy building, originally constructed in the late eighteenth century. Little or no evidence of earlier fabric was noted within the walls of the building that were stripped of render. However, the remains of two machine rooms in the eastern section of the present building were revealed after the removal of the existing ground floor structure. The floor contained evidence of stone bases for machinery mounts together with impressions of partition walls; there were also traces of a boiler mounting, presumably for a boiler to provide power to both of the machine rooms.
