Central Archaeology Service, support projects

The Central Archaeology Service continued to provide facilities and expertise with regard to projects of national importance, and archaeological advice and support were also provided to the Historic Properties Group. CAS staff assisted in the design and monitoring of the analysis and preparation of publication reports on projects at Lulworth Castle, Sherborne Old Castle, Berry Pomeroy Castle, and Launceston Castle. A significant role was played in training initiatives and review of methodology, and staff also contributed to, and led, courses on Project Management. Working jointly with the Ancient Monuments Laboratory, the CAS organised and ran a series of seminars to promote greater conservation awareness among archaeologists who handle artefacts, and a project was also carried out to assess the effectiveness of techniques used in processing soil samples. A regular newsletter is distributed to inform colleagues in English Heritage and the archaeology profession as a whole about the activities of the CAS and the range of archaeological results emerging from its projects.
