Both the Medieval Pottery Research Group and the Roman Pottery Group identified the need to train practitioners working in ceramics. One of most pressing requirements was for training in the field of identifying inclusions found in, and added to, the clay used for making pottery vessels. Petrological studies are only taught at a few universities and many of those working in ceramics of all periods have never had access to any formal training in this subject. Four intensive two-day courses have now been run by EH in conjunction with the Department of Archaeology, University of Southampton, and have proved to be very popular, filling a long felt need; two more courses will be held early in 1998.
