Regional programmes during the year produced only modest requirements for archaeological work. The restoration of the 18th-century Burlington Lane Gate patte d'oie in the grounds of Chiswick House was accompanied by watching briefs. These supplemented previous excavations in advance of work and helped to guide the details of the restoration. Further remains of gravel metalling were found, including a defined eastern edge to the apron surrounding the obelisk. During the realignment of the western allee, the 19th-century hoggin path extended in the 1950s was recorded, together with evidence for 18th-century planting trenches. At Eltham Palace, repointing and repair of a short length of the moat wall was preceded by building recording. This identified a series of phases from the early 14th to the present century, and confirmed the documentary evidence for a substantial Jacobean lodging range demolished during the Civil War. Archaeological monitoring of a cable trench at the Jewel Tower, Westminster for the Parliamentary Works Directorate revealed the remains of a stone-floored mediaeval building and the cut for the construction of the moat in 1365. The well-preserved medieval drain from Westminster Abbey at the south-western corner of the site was also investigated and recorded.
