Historic landscape assessment

The work reported in previous years continued in a number of ways. In particular, the package of review and developmental projects carried out by us for Cobhams Resource Consultants in 1993-95 were brought together in a format suitable for formal publication, and we hope to issue this during 1996-97. The results have already been circulated through conferences, but formal publication will offer a platform for further work.

The way forward has been pioneered in Cornwall where the Cornwall Archaeological Unit has completed its county-wide historic landscape assessment map and is working towards formal publication of its methodology. Similar projects, with local adaptations, have also been carried out with EH support in Avon and the Peak National Park, the former as a mainly local initiative, the latter as part of a Monuments Protection Programme project to explore the lead-mining industry in its landscape context.

The Countryside Commission's Countryside Character Programme has also continued, aiming for first publication late in 1996. Alongside the medieval settlement map prepared for the Monuments Protection Programme, this should give us a valuable framework for landscape archaeology at national level.
