Initial anthropological report on the skeletal material recovered from the crypt, nearly 400 individuals being associated with coffin plates giving personal details. Social backgrounds were reconstructed, the majority of the individuals being of Huguenot descent, many involved in the silk industry. Some marked differences from modern skeletal samples are documented.

The need to clear the crypt at Christ Church, Spitalfields resulted in the recovery of c 1000 burials from 1729 to 1852, whose interrelationships and significance are examined in detail. Safety procedures had to be devised in the face of danger from smallpox and lead-poisoning, and specialised logistical, management, and recording procedures were also laid down. The coffins and associated metalwork, artefacts, and textiles are discussed in detail, as are the site formation processes.
