Longstone Edge, Derbyshire, survey for management

A topographical survey was carried out across an area containing 2 Bronze Age bowl barrows which are in danger of slipping over the edge of mine workings and are further threatened by subsidence cracks. The survey and visual observations on-site ascertained that the barrows are in a good state of preservation, despite damage by subsidence. Well preserved faunal remains were visible in 1 of the sections of the fissures which neatly bisect the barrows: a further piece of bone retrieved from the site has been identified as part of an adult human skull. The 2 barrows cannot be conserved, and will be excavated during 1996-97.
