Doll Tor stone circle, Peak District National Park

Doll Tor,stone circle, Peak District National park

Shortly before the spring equinox in 1993, the small stone circle at Doll Tor was seriously damaged by visitors who reorganised many of the stones. EH, through the regional team, enabled the Peak Park's archaeology service to record the damage. Using the survey by Heathcote dating from the 1930s, supplemented by keyhole excavation, the circle was repaired to its condition following Heathcote's excavations, except that 2 fallen orthostats were replaced in their correct positions in order to reduce the temptation in future for visitors to change the arrangements of these 2 stones. Unexpectedly, important evidence was found for the survival of undisturbed archaeological deposits. A discrete interpretation board, funded by our partners in the Peak Park, now explains the importance of the monument.
